BIBLE REFERENCES:

Psalms 23 (NIV) “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, and he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Psalm 25:12-14 (NIV) “Who, then, is the man that fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way chosen for him. He will spend his days in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land. The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them.”

Psalm 37:1-4 (NIV) “Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Ecclesiastes 1:2, 14 (NIV) “’Meaningless! Meaningless!’ says the Teacher, ‘Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.’ I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

APPLICATION:

What a big difference a little hope makes. When you lose hope, life becomes pointless and meaningless - without purpose.
An interesting reading is the Old Testament account of the life of King Solomon. The Scriptures tell us that during the early years of King Solomon’s reign, he sought God’s guidance and followed God closely in leading and governing his people. As a result Solomon flourished and his fame as a wise leader spread throughout the land. Solomon became very rich and powerful.

It is not exactly clear when Solomon’s life jumped the tracks. My hunch is it all started when his success got to his head and he actually began to believe that he accomplished everything in life completely on his own (like many today!). He viewed himself as a “self made man”. Somewhere along the way he took over the controls and left God behind. How did it all this work out for him? Well, not very well, according to his writing in Ecclesiastes. The wisest man on earth became a cranky old man, disillusioned with life.

Solomon was not at all like his father, King David, who wrote many of the Psalms we enjoy today. David looked at life differently. He put his faith and trust in God. He continually sought God’s wisdom and guidance. He put his delight in his God and God continued to bless his reign as king of Israel.

What takes away our hope? Living in sin and ignoring God!
 A PRAYER:

“God forgive me for all of my sins, fill me with that faith and hope that King David wrote about in the Psalms.  Give me the same hope for the future that you gave him.”
