Two Ears One Mouth
BIBLE REFERENCES:

Proverbs 4:20 (LivBible) “Listen, son of mine, to what I say. Listen carefully. Keep these thoughts ever in mind; let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they will mean real life for you, and radiant health.”

Proverbs 8:6, 7 (LivBible) “Listen to me! For I have important information for you. Everything I say is right and true, for I hate lies and every kind of deception. My advice is wholesome and good. There is nothing of evil in it. My words are plain and clear to anyone with half a mind – if it is only open! My instruction is far more valuable than silver or gold.”

Proverbs 10:19 (LivBible) “Don’t talk so much. You keep putting your foot in your mouth. Be sensible and turn off the flow!”

Proverbs 10:20 (LivBible) “When a good man (or woman) speaks, he (she) is worth listening to, but the words of fools are a dime a dozen.”

Proverbs 12:18 (LivBible) “Some people like to make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise soothe and heal.”

Proverbs 13:3 (LivBible) “Self-control means controlling the tongue! A quick retort can ruin everything.”

Proverbs 15:1 (LivBible) “A soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh words cause quarrels.”

Proverbs 15:28 (LivBible) “A good man thinks before he speaks; the evil man pours out his evil words without a thought.”

Proverbs 17:27, 28 (LivBible) “The man of few words and a settled mind is wise; therefore, even a fool is thought to be wise when he is silent. It pays him to keep his mouth shut.”

Proverbs 19:27 (LivBible) “Stop listening to teaching that contradicts what you know is right.”

James 1:19 (LivBible) “Dear brothers, don’t ever forget that it is best to listen much, speak little, and not become angry; for anger doesn’t make us good, as God demands that we must be.”
James 3:3 (LivBible) “If anyone can control his tongue, it proves that he has perfect control over himself in every other way. “

1 John 2:4 (LivBible) “Someone may say; ‘I am a Christian; I am on my way to heaven, I belong to Christ.’ But, if he doesn’t do what Christ tells him to, he is a liar.”

APPLICATION:

Someone has said, “God has designed us with two ears and one mouth; therefore, we should listen twice as much as we speak”. I think this is good advice. If everyone would follow this simple rule there would be a lot fewer misunderstandings and problems in this world.

The Bible tells us a lot about talking too much. The Book of Proverbs makes it clear that talking too much is not only a waste of time but it can be dangerous to our health. As a Christian, a much better way to get the message of hope to the world is to live out what I believe, not just speak it.
 A PRAYER:

“God, help me to gain control of my tongue. Help me to say only those things that are helpful and uplifting. Give me the strength to practice what you have taught me.”

James 1:26 (LivBible) “Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much. “
