BIBLE REFERENCES:

Proverbs 1: 7 (NIV) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Proverbs 1:22 “How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?”

Romans 1:20, 21 (NIV) “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

Romans 1:25 (NIV) “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever praised.”

Romans 7:15-18 (LivBible) “I don’t understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I can’t. I do what I don’t want to – what I hate. I know perfectly well that what I am doing is wrong, and my bad conscience proves that I agree with these laws I am breaking. But I can’t help myself, because I’m no longer doing it. It is sin inside me that is stronger than I am that makes me do these evil things.”

Romans 7:21-25 (LivBible) “It seems to be a fact of life that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love to do God’s will so far as my new nature is concerned; but there is something else deep within me, in my lower nature, that is at war with my mind and wins the fight and makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. ….. Who will free me from my slavery to this deadly lower nature? Thank God! It has been done by Jesus Christ our Lord. He has set me free.”
The Scriptures tell us that knowledge and wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord (a reverent awe of his power, majesty and holiness - NIV). It does not begin with our cleverness, ingenuity or our profound deep thinking. You say you cannot hear God or understand his ways? The Bible is chucked full of his instructions; it is overflowing with wisdom and truth. Take time to read it and meditate on it and allow God’s Holy Spirit to teach you its meaning; then, you will know his ways. Be teachable!

A PRAYER:

“God, help me to better understand your ways, give me a teachable heart that I will want to do your will.”

APPLICATION:

At times I have had to shake my head in wonderment at some of the foolish things mankind has done over the years. Then, I had to remind myself that I am one of them.
I am certain there are times when God looks down on us and wonders how something he created so perfectly got so far off the path he had planned for us. What he tells us to do, we ignore. The direction he pushes us toward, we jerk back and go the other way. We seem to think we know more about what is best for our lives than God.
