BIBLE REFERENCES:

Psalm 119:66 (NIV) “Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.”

Psalm 119:97-101 (NIV) “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word.”

Psalm 119:105 (NIV) “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

Romans 8:14-16 (NIV) “Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father’. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

1 Corinthians 2:9-12 (NIV) “However, as it is written: ‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him - but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV) “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?”
APPLICATION:

Spiritual truth, wisdom and understanding all come from God. You won’t get this from your neighbor, your best friend, your mentor or from your university professors. God alone is the source of truth, wisdom and spiritual understanding. It is God’s Holy Spirit that enlightens us to the absolute truth. The Holy Spirit breaks down God’s Word so that we can understand it and apply it to our lives.

It is true that other people can help us understand God’s word better but it is God’s Holy Spirit living within us that enlightens us, quickens our thinking and gives us insight to the truth. Without God’s Holy Spirit living in us we cannot live the holy lives God expects of us. The Holy Spirit gives us the strength and ability to resist the world’s attractive and easy ways. It is God’s Holy Spirit that directs us on the right path God has chosen for us. It is God’s Holy Spirit that bears witness with our spirit that we are actually His beloved children, children he wants to care for and bless.

You can be the smartest, most educated and articulate person on the planet and still lack wisdom, good judgment and common sense. These qualities are gifts from God; they are not obtained simply by reading books, becoming more educated or from scientific discoveries.

A PRAYER

“God, help me to rely less on myself - my acquired skills, my knowledge, and my education - and more on your Holy Spirit for guidance in my life.”
