Genesis 1:26 (LivBible) “Then God said, ‘Let us make a man – someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas’. ……. Like God did God make man; Man and maid did he make them.”

Matthew 22:37 “(NIV) Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.’”

John 4:23, 24 (NIV) “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

John 14:15, 16 (LivBible) “If you love me, obey me; and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Comforter, and he will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit who leads into all truth. The world at large cannot receive him, for it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. Romans 8:14-16 (NIV) “Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba. Father’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
APPLICATION: 

The Bible teaches us that we humans were created in the likeness of God (Genesis 1:26); so, it should be no surprise to us that we humans have inherited some of God’s qualities and characteristics. God created us to be both physical and spiritual beings. This is what separates us from all other living things. No other creature was created with a soul. God reserved that for us humans. The soul is that part of us that lives forever. It is our soul that connects our physical parts to the spiritual realm, allowing us to communicate with God.

Just as God is a plurality of persons (Trinity), so are we humans a plurality of persons. We are not just a physical body, nor are we just a reasoning mind. God has integrated body, mind and soul to form a single, unique human being.  

Of course, there are some who scoff at the notion that God even exists. They reject the idea of a soul. They believe we humans are nothing more than an evolutionary extension of the animal kingdom. However, history alone disproves this! Every nation and tongue that ever existed on earth has a past that recognizes the existence of a superior, spiritual being. Only humans have ever constructed cathedrals and shrines, built monuments and statues, written poems, sung songs, or prayed prayers in recognition of their creator. No animal has ever done this! There is a spiritual part embedded in all human beings – by God.
